Hi all,
Hope someone might have an idea how to figure out the situation I am in:
I recently got divorced. I have a joint credit account with my ex which I was added to (as I always thought) as authorized user. But when I called credit company and asked to remove my name from that acc, i was told that I was a joint owner. Well I probably forgot that I have signed an application(they showed me a copy of signed app.). I never used the card since we decided to get divorced.
My ex took cash advance from our cc account in amount of the limit. He said that he needed it for business and promised to closed the card in couple months (I am talking 25k). This amount and account itself is under his responsibilities per our divorce agreement. He has paid minimum payments for a year and did not pay off the card and finally offered me to pay it off. Then I started getting calls from collection agencies probably about his other accounts. I assume he probably took money from all his credit accounts and maybe will file for bankruptcy. And right now I am trying to figure this out and I have to make minimum payments, because don’t want to ruin my credit history. I spent quite of a time to get good limits and score.
I don’t know how I got myself in this account as joint owner. Maybe I was hypnotized or something. I have many of my own credit accounts and did have many before marriage. I did not need to be on that card. But that is what I am up against now.
Here is my question: do I have any options except paying it off or filing bankruptcy. Is there any way to make him responsible for this debt? What kind of lawyer should I talk to?
Thank everybody in advance.
