В ходе наземной операции против боевиков Курдской рабочей партии турецкая армия продвинулась на 25 километров вглубь северного Ирака, где расположены их опорные базы, передает агентство Associated Press.

Как сообщило турецкое командование, в результате боевых действий, в понедельник, 25 февраля, были убиты, по одним данным, 24 курдских боевика, по другим - 41.

Днем ранее военные уничтожили еще 33 сепаратиста, не считая тех, кто был, по их словам, "нейтрализован" в результате артобстрелов и бомбардировок.

Всего, по данным агентства AFP, с момента начала операции было убито 153 вооруженных члена Курдской рабочей партии. Столкновения с боевиками продолжаются в ряде районов северного Ирака, однако, где именно, не уточняется.

Со своей стороны генштаб турецкой армии подтвердил информацию о 17 погибших военнослужащих. Однако курды сообщают, что турецкие потери гораздо выше.

Кроме того, в ходе спецоперации разбился военный вертолет. Предположительно, он был сбит курдами, хотя турецкое командование пока не назвало точную причину аварии.

В ответ на турецкое вторжение один из лидеров Рабочей партии Курдистана, главнокомандующий курдской армией на севере Ирака Бахоз Эрдал (Bahoz Erdal), призвал проживающих в Турции курдов поднять восстание против местных властей.

Although the Turkish incursion into northern Iraq is described as the largest cross-border offensive in years, some media reports say it turned out to be a small-scale operation.



According to the BBC, Iraqi Kurdish officials and U.S. sources said only a few hundred Turkish soldiers participated in the attack against PKK hideouts in the region, which began Thursday evening.

No vehicles or tanks were involved in the offensive, although helicopter gunships were in action as well as jets and artillery.
According to AFP, the Turkish military says it has killed at least 112 rebels since launching the incursion. It puts its own losses at 15 so far, including two pilots of a helicopter that the army said had been "destroyed," without specifying whether it had been shot down.
On the other hand, a senior PKK leader said Monday on the Internet site of the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency that the rebels had killed 81 soldiers so far.
It is virtually impossible to verify the claims of either side because the fighting is taking place in largely inaccessible terrain in tough winter conditions.

• Limited?

Turkish officials have given assurances on the nature and scope of the incursion.
"The target, purpose, size and parameters of this operation are limited," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. "Our armed forces will come back in the shortest time possible as soon as they achieve their objectives."
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari - himself a Kurd - also described the operation as "very, very limited".
But the Iraqi government urged Turkey "to withdraw its forces from Iraqi soil as soon possible", echoing a similar call by U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates.
"The government of Iraq calls on Turkey to respect its sovereignty and unity and considers that the unilateral operation across the border is a threat to the region," a statement by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government said.
Iraqi Kurds, who fear that a Turkish incursion could threaten their autonomous region, have vowed a tough response if civilians come under attack.
"The Kurdish Peshmerga (security) forces are on a state of alert and will defend themselves if the Turkish forces launch an incursion into areas under the control of the Kurdistan regional government," Peshmerga spokesman Jabbar Yawar told Reuters.
Meanwhile, the U.S. admitted that it had been notified in advance of the latest Turkish operation, and received assurances that it would be directed solely at PKK positions.
"We were notified and we urged the Turkish government to limit their operations to precise targeting of the PKK, to limit the scope and duration of their operations," White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

• Protective U.S. umbrella

Turkey says about 4,000 PKK rebels are holed up in northern Iraq and use the region to attack Turkish targets as part of their campaign for self-rule in Kurdish-majority southeast Turkey.
Ankara also accuses the federal autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan of tolerating PKK rebels on its soil and even supplying them with weapons and ammunition.
Both Turkey and the Iraqi Kurds are American allies, and the prospect of armed confrontation between the two has been a cause of concern for Washington as it seeks to avoid instability in a relatively stable area of Iraq. The U.S. also fears a prolonged military campaign inside Iraq would undermine the fragile U.S.-backed government in Baghdad.
In fact, Ankara knows very well that Washington wants to protect the autonomous region's Kurdish administration, which has enjoyed a protective U.S. umbrella since the early 1990s.

• Second incursion since October

The Turkish operation is the second land incursion the military reported since October, when the government won parliamentary approval for cross-border military action against the PKK.
In December, Turkish soldiers briefly crossed into Iraq to stop a PKK unit from infiltrating Turkey. Five air strikes against PKK targets in the region were also carried out since mid-December with U.S. intelligence assistance.
Since then, Turkey has massed tens of thousands of troops on the border, a build-up which is still in place.
Iraqi Kurds feared that a major invasion was imminent, and that their own autonomy would be the real target.
But the invasion didn’t happen, mainly because the U.S. convinced Turkey to deal with the PKK with pin-point operations.
It remains to be seen whether Washington would succeed in limiting the scale of the ongoing operation or not.

Курды в неделимом американском Ираке, какую независимость они могут обьявить? В Турции им тоже ничего не светит.

;) Лучше всего - чтобы Ирак вообще вошёл весь и целиком в состав Турции. :grum: (тогда бы Турцию очень сильно захотели бы принять в Евросоюз )
