Democrats acknowledged that their move to give the seat to the Louisiana Democrat, who is under federal investigation for bribery, would not happen via the simple and fast unanimous consent motion they had planned to offer.

Instead, every Democrat will now have to go on record on Jefferson’s appointment, which could be particularly difficult for some freshmen member who ran last November on an anti-corruption platform.

”It’s a tough vote for some of our guys,” said a Democratic aide familiar with the situation. ”But in the end, we’re going to just have to do it.”Jefferson has been under federal scrutiny for nearly two years. His well-publicized case includes FBI video tape of him allegedly accepting a cash bribe, $90,000 of which federal authorities say was later found stashed in a freezer in his home.

Still, Democratic leaders believe the resolution giving Jefferson a seat on the Homeland panel will ultimately pass.

Instead, every Democrat will now have to go on record on Jefferson’s appointment, which could be particularly difficult for some freshmen member who ran last November on an anti-corruption platform.

“It’s a tough vote for some of our guys,” said a Democratic aide familiar with the situation. “But in the end, we’re going to just have to do it.”Jefferson has been under federal scrutiny for nearly two years. Still, Democratic leaders believe the resolution giving Jefferson a seat on the Homeland panel will ultimately pass.

For the second day in a row, GOP leaders criticized the appointment, noting that as a member of the Homeland Security panel, Jefferson would have access to classified information.

But their argument was dulled somewhat Thursday by news that Jefferson had flown to his New Orleans district earlier in the day as a guest of President Bush aboard Air Force One. Bush is visiting the area assess the ongoing recovery efforts.

In an uncommon move for a Democrat, William Jefferson did step down from the House Small Business Committee, but no one can claim that the Democrats' response to Jefferson's indictment is proof of superior ethical standards:

Despite mounds of evidence against, including being implicated by a former staffer, Democrats turned a blind eye to his troubles.

Democrats only booted him off the Ways and Means Committee after it was revealed that there was videotape evidence of him accepting a bribe.

Jefferson was reelected last November despite the scandal.

Jefferson received a standing ovation from the Congressional Black Caucus despite the scandal.

Nancy Pelosi nearly placed Jefferson on the House Homeland Security Committee despite the scandal.
It is also disturbing that Nancy Pelosi herself shut down the Ethics committee investigation of William Jefferson.

Mr. Trout said that although the government had conducted an extensive investigation into Mr. Jefferson’s activities, the indictment showed there was no evidence that he promised any legislative action. “There is no suggestion that he promised anyone any appropriations,” Mr. Trout said. “There were no earmarks. There were no government contracts.”

Democratic leaders in the House moved quickly to distance themselves from Mr. Jefferson, with some lawmakers calling for his resignation. Speaker Nancy Pelosi intends to convene a leadership meeting this week, aides said, to discuss taking away Mr. Jefferson’s seat on the Small Business Committee, his only remaining assignment.
“The charges in the indictment against Congressman Jefferson are extremely serious,” Ms. Pelosi said in a statement. “While Mr. Jefferson, just as any other citizen, must be considered innocent until proven guilty, if these charges are proven true, they constitute an egregious and unacceptable abuse of public trust and power.”
Last year, Ms. Pelosi drew criticism from the Congressional Black Caucus for removing Mr. Jefferson from his seat on the powerful Ways and Means panel. After he won re-election last year, Democratic leaders sought to appoint him to the Homeland Security Committee, but Republican leaders threatened to block the appointment and debate it on the House floor in the early months of the Democratic majority. He was not named to the committee.

As justice is allow to take its course, this is a real moment of opportunity for the Democrats to start practicing what they preach. Will all the Democrats who received contributions from Jefferson return thee dirty money? Considering former DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel refused to get rid of money donated to the DCCC by convicted felons, his fellow Democrats don't have much of a standard to follow... So, don't expect Democrats to start parting with the dirty money they received from William Jefferson

Смотрите правде в лицо. Делэя уже прокуроры обвинили в преступлении (в одном из). Был [indictment]. А у Джефферсона [indictmenta] тогда не было. Как только появился [indictment], Джефферсона со всех постов прогнали.

Неужели не хватает силы духа признать, что неправы? ;)

Ах да, Вы ещё забыли (?) упомянуть, что демократы активно работали против переизбрания Джефферсона на выборах и поддерживали его конкурентку (тоже демократку). Но, к сожалению, избиратели его вновь послали в Конгресс. Народ не выбирают. :rtyu:
