Это может быть просто царапиной, но наказание следует за то что смылись. Даже если царапина ничтожная (за <damage> ниже $500 даже ДМВ не уведомляют) и никто не пострадал. Таковы законы здесь, про Масс. не знаю.

legally, leaving the scene of the accident irrespective of the amount of damege...but obviously all nuanses would be taken into account in court if it came to that.

I am obviously not an attorney, and speaking only from a singular personal experience where the other party damaged a vehicle and later pled guilty to a lesser charge as he was facing 15 days in jail....instead lost liscence for some time and paid some fines.

nope. just a guy who was caught because his own parents reported him...as it was their car that he drove.
