Хммм... Даже проверил... Я про Gmail относительно давно слышал, думал, что он уже нормально функционирует...

Да работает он нормально.
Просто Google хочет ограничить приток чайников в Gmail. Gmail - для продвинутых!
И доступ пока ограничен.
Но тот, кто очень хочет, всегда найдёт invitation! :-)
