Asian Seed Lowers Rat Cholesterol
Fiber from the seeds of a common Asian shrub can lower cholesterol so effectively that it puts blockbuster drugs to shame. Chinese medicine experts have used the seeds of Cassia tora to treat heart disease for ages, but until recently its effectiveness had not been proven. A team of scientists led by Tae Youl Ha, from the Korea Food Research Institute and Chung-Ang University verified that that the fiber lowers cholesterol in rats by over 27 percent. They reported their findings in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
The researchers purchased the seeds from an oriental medicine market in Seoul, ground them up and extracted the fiber, then fed that fiber to healthy rats and rats with high cholesterol as five percent of their total diet. Control rats were not fed any of the Cassia fiber. After five weeks, the researchers measured the serum and liver cholesterol of each rat.
Other fibers including those found in guar gum, psyllium, and oat bran show similar effects. None of them can be taken as a daily pill. Instead, they must be included as one of the major components of a tightly controlled diet."
