yeeeah, and the rest of the states

    --- a bunch of malarkey states ---

    /and look at the contender # 49..what a solid performer../

    26th. New York –
    Debt per Capita: $13,804 (48th)
    Unemployment Rate: 8.3% (22nd)
    Home Price Change (’06 – ’09): 0.9% (36th)
    Median Household Income: $56,659 (15th)

New York is another middle-of-the-road state characterized by extremes. The Empire State ranks second in GDP per capita ($49,370 per person) but has the second worst debt per capita ($13,804 per person). New York’s legislative body has been plagued by budget deadlocks, political scandal and resignations.
    27th. Oregon —
    Debt per Capita: $7,689 (30th)
    Unemployment Rate: 10.6% (44th)
    Home Price Change (’06 – ’09): 8.8% (21st)
    Median Household Income: $48,457 (24th)

Oregon, on average, is a fairly well-run state. It has, however, been hit extremely hard by unemployment, with reported rates of 10.6% for August, 2010.
    36th. Texas –
    Debt per Capita: $8,711 (36th)
    Unemployment Rate: 8.3% (24th)
    Home Price Change (’06 – ’09): 10.4% (16th)
    Median Household Income: $48,259 (25th)

The second most populous state in the nation, Texas scores fairly average in most categories. There are, however, two areas where Texas places dead last. The Lone Star State has the lowest percentage of its twenty-five and older population with a high school diploma – one in every five fails to obtain a high school education. Also, 23.8% of its population does not have health insurance, the worst rate in the country.
    42nd. Florida –
    Debt per Capita: $7,666 (29th)
    Unemployment Rate: 11.7% (46th)
    Home Price Change (’06 – ’09): -20.9% (48th)
    Median Household Income: $44,736 (38th)

Despite receiving the ninth-lowest rank, Florida maintains an amazing AAA rating from S&P, which is the only reason it didn’t rank as the worst state on our list. From 2006 to 2009, property values in the sunshine state dropped 20.9%, making it the third-worst in that category. Despite its significant number of older residents, Florida also ranks 47th in health insurance coverage and has the fourth-worst violent crime rate.
    43rd. Illinois –
    Debt per Capita: $9,617 (42nd)
    Unemployment Rate: 10.1% (41st)
    Home Price Change (’06 – ’09): 1% (35th)
    Median Household Income: $53,966 (17th)

Illinois finds itself with such a low ranking in part due to its high unemployment (10.10%) and in part due to its high debt per capita ($9,613.) The state also suffers from poor fiscal governance, however, and received a credit rating of A+, the second worst S&P rating granted to all the states.
    49th. California –
    Debt per Capita: $9,228 (39th)
    Unemployment Rate: 12.4% (48th)
    Home Price Change (’06 – ’09): -28.3% (49th)
    Median Household Income: $58,931 (9th)

While it does not quite rank as the worst state on our list, California stands out as being among the most poorly governed. The most populous state in the union has been mired in debt and political unrest for nearly a decade. It bears the unique honor of being the only state considered economically unstable enough to have its debts, at a record $341 billion, rated at an A- by S&P. It ranks 42nd in the country in health insurance coverage, despite having a state-sponsored health insurance program. The golden state also ranks 48th in high school completion. Between 2006 and 2009, California experienced the second worst household value decline, with occupied homes losing an average of nearly 30% percent of their value.

--- Colorado vs Washington state ---
nice little personal observation from people

    ...
really depends alot on what you are looking for. (Work, culture, recreation, weather)

I find WA is not as friendly, and most of our good friends are still from Colo, but that really is specific to areas, as WA home is pretty 'Urban' county (commuters to PDX) and the rural parts have been loggers (independant) Colo was more agrarian, (which I prefer, more socialble, help each other)

interesting that 70% of our neighbors in WA have unlisted phone numbers, I tribute this to the fact this area was settled by folks wanting to 'get away', but I note that certain social studies target the PNW as being 'anti-social'. Kinda like the church statistics ~3-5% churched in PNW where Colo is likely closer to 30-50%.

    WA - ***
is really 2 different states (east side / farms and dry and conservative) West is liberal, green, timber and Starbucks (and controls all the voting, same as OR)
no state income tax, ok if you have income (I'm recently retired, (laid-off) and am forced to leave WA due to property tax burden) Tough taxation for an independent businessman also. (I'm also tired of 'leaky cars, rusty tools and electrical issues due to moisture', we had 24" rain in Nov and 12" in Dec, that's adequate...) It has snowed 4 times, tho not much, but 3 days of freezing rain and 70 mph winds just last week. It's been an 'extreme' water yr already, started in Oct...
Recreation is pretty good, and you can still 'get away' without crowds.
weather, you can choose from the gamit, Spokane is quite similar to Colo, but cloudier in winter and warmer in summer.
Culture is good and diverse (you don't have to go to Denver (or Portland or Seattle for everything)
Lots to see and do (sea kayaking to snow skiing all within 1 hr (if on west side)) But, the rain can get some folks down, and some need to use 'light therapy' in winter. Basically you need to exercise and endure / enjoy it. It really wears me down, having been a prairie boy, and often having to work on my WA farm in the rain (prune, plow and plant...) + building homes and structures, you just have to get wet and do-it, don't wait for a clear day (June) I dislike only having 80-100 days of sun to get outdoor stuff built, bulldozed, fixed, improved... and end up missing those as precious days of recreation,

so... don't be a driven farmer and live 'westside' (you also have a very tenuos crop production... mold, frost, ... (but not hail, like Colo ) Having 'elective hobbies' outside vs. 'mandantory work tasks' could make living w/ 285 days of rain a whole lot different, my wife thinks it's great (she sews and reads...)

WA schools (k-12) are good on the Islands (san Juan) and in Pullman , Lynden and along Lake WA $$$, pretty crummy elsewhere, the state statistics are available and very telling, you need to be selective, or better yet - be involved!! We homeschooled thru grade 10, then kids did 'community college' (for free jr and sr yrs WA 'Running Start Program') both graduated from state U's with only 2 years of loans

    Colo ****
is really nice, can be mild in areas (not this week...very rare blizzard, I rode my bike to work all but 3 days my last yr in Colorado) Biking is MUCH better - snow shoulders on roads, legal use of right lane to bikes, people give you space (definately not that way in WA ) lots to see, not so much to do... hiking vistas are much more scenic (fewer trees in the way) Stars are great. Beach is A LONG ways away...

It's really getting too crowded and expensive and available water might become a BIG(-ger) issue, especially if / when we(USA) has a food crisis... The Denver airport is in Kansas (I like to travel internationally, so Portland and Seattle are (were) great hubs)
Pollution is a problem on eastern slope (front range)
Schools are probably better, tho not necessarily
    ...
WA is not landlocked. Anything you get in CO, you can get in WA. Awesome outdoor activities, mountains, forests, desert, etc. WA is much more diverse geographically, plus you can't get the ocean in CO. Honestly, I was just at the Keystone resort outside of Denver this August and I think the Rockies are overrated. While it was pretty there, I was expecting more. The Cascades are the most beautiful mountains in the US, hands down. I've seen them all and I'm still partial to the Cascades. The scenic route around Mt. Rainier is one of the most beautiful drives you would ever take. Just my 2 cents.
i moved here from denver about a year ago. here is my take, colo is dry climate even with four season. denver is kinda like an island on its own. some what isolated city. liberal like PNW. things cost more in WA than colo. coffee, fast food, tobacco, beer, food, etc. colo have 4.63% income tax, low property tax. if you are a home owner in WA, they will get you. im paying about 3-4k per year. i used to pay about $900 per year in property taxes in denver. no income tax state, but they make it up in other areas. WA is a beautiful state no doubt about it! people are not as open and friendly as denver folks. most people here mind their business, kinda hard to meet new people here. but, lot of outdoor activities, and nature to enjoy. i love WA so far, i dont regret moving here.
My part of WA has that much sunshine, and a lot less snow. But I'm three hours from Seattle. Washington is pretty, but has not the same density of jaw-dropping mute-striking sights as CO. Not much here to compare to the Sangre de Cristos at sunset, nor the Black Canyon of the Gunnison (what could?). But that's nothing against WA; Colorado just has more stunners, like the view of Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive from Leadville.

I've lived in the Poudre Canyon in CO, so that's the part I understand best, though I've been all over the state on trips. I've lived in WA since 1974 (when we moved from CO). If you live in Seattle or its surrounds, seven months grey drizzly rain, five months paradise. Less sunburns than CO, as the altitude difference and humidity give more atmospheric protection. (That's another bill I've paid in pain.)

Politically, Seattle is ultra-PC. If someone chooses to be a drunk bum or crackhead who commits crimes, it's got to be anyone's fault but his. Especially if he's non-white and non-Asian (in Seattle, Asian is the upper ethnic class rather than white; if you ever see an Asian bum, call the news, they'd be fascinated; also call me, I'd drive to see that). My beloved alma mater, UW, has an actual magazine it sends out to alumni congratulating itself on its diversity (read: actually gives non-WASPs power). I lived sixteen years in Seattle and I liked its diversity, but I got sick of the general psychosis about it.

Seattle appears friendlier than Colorado at first blush, but it's fairly surface; making inroads takes years. Hate to say it, but Colorado is almost as cold as New Mexico. The difference is that in Colorado, by and large, the world's bullies are not tolerated and coddled and cowered from as they are in Seattle. In Colorado, they are punched out, perhaps even shot in parts of the state, so they have been winnowed out some. That's a benefit. In Seattle, if you get bullied, it's your fault for objecting to it. Saw it over and over.
