What I meant was:

Russian, (Slavic) people are very good people, good nation.
We are not robots by nature, at all. Like he was presuming/picking on you.
We are exact opposite of it (comparing to all other nationalities)
Our culture and our nature is based on values of goodness, kindness, purity and tenderness of the soul.
For example - look even on Russian literature - it's values

Unfortunately, after 1917 all the low-lives (of society) the worst part of society/ nation - came to power.
Although they would never represent majority of Russians, and they would not represent Russians as a whole- but still - they came to power back then...

And therefore everything changed for worse.
After 1917 people were brought up in communism, and it's values.
KGB horror machine was there, and all those typical things of those times...
. Society changed. Our true nature (as people, society) was repressed, in attempt to modify it...
And the worst people (and values) became trendsetters since 1917 Revolution until almost now.
That's why many, foreigners, people today (like your man) - mistakenly perceive a "fruit" of SOVIET system
mistakenly perceive it for our true nature(qualities), as ethnic group.
But those people with such opinion as your man -They not getting it right...

In a nutshell: typical SOVIET person is absolutely not the same as "typical ethnic Russian"
