Traveling to Budapest is fairly easy from Lviv. I've done it multiple times.
You can choose:
1) Direct train - easy, comfortable, no hassle on the border, 1st class compartments (2 people per compartment), reasonably priced). Cora is right - train #15 leaves Lviv at around 8 pm usually (has been so for the last 2-3 years), and arrives to Budapest at around 11 am.
2) You can choose from Lviv to Chop, or Uzhgorod. Spend a day there, enjoying the scenery and local attractions, and then take trains from Chop to Budapest. There are plenty of those running every 2-3 hours daily.
3) Finally, the cheapest version is going from Lviv to Chop, then getting a train from Chop to Zahony (it will be around 1 hour across the border), and from Zahony take a train to Budapest.
