"... Marte Dalelv, the young Norwegian woman at the center of the Dubai alleged rape storm, has been shown leniency. Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum announced this morning she has been pardoned and thus will not have to serve out her highly controversial 16-month imprisonment term. See here for the New York Daily News’s account. She had been found guilty of drinking alcohol and having extra-marital sex – charges that were leveled against her after she accused a Sudanese-born colleague of rape.
I would like to think that the enormous clamor in the West about the sentence yesterday may have helped her case with the sheikh. (My own post alone drew more than 760,000 hits and more than 700 reader comments.) Either way, the sheikh has done the image of both Dubai and the larger Arab world a favor.
