We are becoming very concerned about the potential of damaging winds this afternoon. Air Force reconnaissance has been showing winds of 100-125 miles per hour a few thousand feet above the ground, especially south of Sandy's eye. Those winds are forecast to wrap around the northern side of Sandy as it approaches the Northeast this afternoon. Some of this energy could reach the ground in gusts. Unfortunately it appears the New York City area may be in the bullseye for this during the afternoon and evening hours today, resulting in the threat of gusts of 80 or even 90 miles per hour at ground level, and even stronger on the upper floors of skyscrapers.
