But often it's the size of the ship and the motion of the ocean that may prevent passengers from getting off regardless of how long he can sty in port. And what if he can't even dock?

If the captain has enough experience anything can be accomplished, regardless of motion of the ocean and the size of the ship, althought i must say that ship of a good size does help.
