A US congressional panel has just labeled the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by Turkish forces during WWI as “genocide.”
The White House had earlier discouraged the decision, urging that the talks would harm reconciliation talks between Turkey and Armenia. The US also did not want to offend Turkey because it is one of their key allies in the Middle East.
During and after World War I, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were forced from their homes and marched hundreds of miles to the deserts of Syria without food or water. Many were massacred and victims of rape and sexual abuse.
Turkey refuses to recognize the event as a genocide, saying that the word does not accurately describe the events, although 20 other countries have already officially recognized the Armenian genocide.
It is unclear if the non-binding resolution will go forward to the full House.
UPDATE: Turkey has recalled its ambassador from the US for consultations after the vote.
