Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Bets that February oil will drop below $39 or $40 a barrel were among the most active options in New York as futures fell to a four-year low after supplies climbed and OPEC failed to convince traders a glut would ease.
Crude oil for January delivery dropped as low as $40.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after U.S. oil supplies rose for the 11th time in 12 weeks to 321.3 million barrels, the highest since the week ended May 9. OPEC agreed to cut output by 4.2 million barrels from September levels.
February $39 puts, bets the price will fall below that level, rose 9 cents to $2.33 a barrel, or $2,330 a contract, at 1:03 p.m. on volume of 345 lots in Nymex electronic trading. One contract is for 1,000 barrels of oil. February $40 puts, the most active contract, rose 18 cents to $2.75 a barrel, or $2,750 a contract, on volume of 906 lots.
January options expired yesterday.
Crude oil for January delivery fell $2.18, or 5 percent, to $41.42 a barrel at 1:03 p.m. on the Nymex. The futures contract expires on Dec. 19. The more-active February contract dropped 75 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $45.95 a barrel.
April $90 Calls
Yesterday, April $90 calls rose 5 cents to $1.18 a barrel, or $1,180 a contract. It was the most active contract in options trading, with volume of 8,350 lots, compared with 205 contracts Dec. 15, according to exchange data released today. Open interest rose to 31,905 contracts from 26,299 on Dec. 15.
Other active contracts included June $60 calls, which rose 7 cents to $7.30 a barrel on volume of 5,605 lots; February $30 puts, which rose 5 cents to 44 cents a barrel, or $440 a contract, on volume of 5,473; March $55 calls, which fell 13 cents to $5.37, or $5,370 a contract, on volume of 5,411; and June $95 calls, which added 12 cents to $1.60 a barrel, or $1,600 a contract, on volume of 5,400.
The Nymex distributes real-time data on electronic trading of crude oil options. Most information on floor trading, where the bulk of trading occurs, isn’t released until the next business day. The delayed data include overall volumes and open interest. The exchange releases a settlement price at the end of each business day.
