Putin is a skilled manipulator. It's not hard to play to the wishes and fears of the American public. After all, we're an open book...with our constant opinion polls and relatively free press. Remember who this man is…a despotic dictator who orders the murder of his political foes, opposition journalists, and reformers for democracy and justice:
--Galina Starovoitova, the prominent pro-democracy Kremlin critic -- murdered at her apartment in St. Petersburg.
--Paul Klebnikov, editor of the Russian edition Forbes magazine, investigating money laundering linked to the Kremlin -- shot and killed in Moscow.
--Andrei Kozlov, First Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Central Bank, a reformer who tried to stamp out money laundering -- shot and killed in Moscow.
--Anna Politkovskaya, who wrote books and articles that expose Russian human rights violations and attacked Putin's dictatorship -- shot and killed at her home in Moscow.
The list is much longer than this. But despite all this, we must remember that there are some things that we and Putin genuinely have in common – a need to keep terrorism in check. It was Putin's government that warned our FBI to keep an eye on Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston bomber. Our FBI did not take his warnings seriously enough, perhaps considering the source of the information.
It's navigating a minefield knowing what to trust and what not to trust from Putin. Even a serial liar will often tell the truth -- as long as it serves his purpose.
