Russia Loses 950 Troops, 30 Tanks, 59 Artillery in One Day: Kyiv

Russian President Vladimir Putin's military lost 950 troops, 30 tanks, and 59 artillery systems in a single day, Ukraine's military said in an update on Thursday.

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces posts figures on Russia's troop and equipment losses as part of its daily update on the full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.

Moscow lost 950 soldiers over the past 24 hours, according to the Ukrainian military's latest casualty toll of Russian troops—bringing the total to 379,610.

Russia has also lost a total of 6,257 tanks, 9,067 artillery systems, 11,621 armored combat vehicles, 12,044 vehicles and fuel tanks, and 331 military jets in the ongoing war, the update said.

Newsweek could not independently verify Kyiv's figures and has contacted Russia's Defense Ministry for comment via email.

Estimates of casualty numbers vary, with Ukraine's figures usually exceeding those of its Western allies. Moscow rarely shares information on the number of casualties it has sustained in the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on January 17 that it is vital that Ukraine retains the initiative in the war, which is approaching the 2-year mark.

"We want the end of the war to depend on Ukrainian actions. The world supports those who have a perspective. And this is a fundamental task—to retain the initiative so that we can become stronger," he said in an address.

In September 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said 5,937 troops had been killed since the war began. The defense ministry has since reported casualty numbers a further three times, confirming the loss of another 162 troops, the BBC's Russian Service reported.
Like Moscow, Kyiv does not provide updated information on its own war casualties. A U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment leaked in April 2023 said that Ukraine had suffered 124,500 to 131,000 casualties, including 15,500 to 17,500 dead.

Shoigu said in December 2023 that Ukraine has lost more than 383,000 troops since the war began. Newsweek could not independently verify the figures.

Russia's Defense Ministry also provided figures on Ukraine's troop and equipment losses throughout the war.

It was cited by Russia's state-run news agency Interfax as saying on Thursday that Ukraine has so far lost 568 aircraft, 265 helicopters, 11,140 unmanned aerial vehicles, 452 anti-aircraft missile systems, 14,768 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,206 combat vehicles of multiple launch rocket systems, 7,846 field artillery guns and mortars, and 17,838 units of special military vehicles.

Russia's defence ministry said 195 of its soldiers were freed, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 207 people -- both soldiers and civilians -- had returned to Ukraine.

"Our people are back. 207 of them. We return them home no matter what," Zelensky said in a social media post.

Russia's defence ministry said "195 Russian servicemen... were returned home".

The exchange was brokered by the United Arab Emirates -- which has played a role in several previous swaps -- Moscow said.

Ukraine said the youngest soldier returning home was 20, while the oldest was 61.

The freed Ukrainians include those who fought in Mariupol and on Snake Island -- a scrubby rock in the Black Sea that secured worldwide fame when the Ukrainians stationed there issued an expletive-laden radio message to Russian attackers.

- 50th swap -

The announcement of the swap -- in a flurry of statements and photos released simultaneously by Moscow and Kyiv -- contrasted sharply with the rhetoric surrounding last week's crash.
Zelensky has accused Moscow of "playing with the lives of Ukrainian prisoners" while Moscow says Ukraine committed a "terrorist act".

Uncertainty remains after the Russian plane crashed in a fireball in the western Belgorod region on January 24.

Moscow says it was ferrying 65 Ukrainian POWs on the way to a scheduled exchange.

Putin claimed last week Kyiv knew dozens of its soldiers could have been on board, an accusation Ukraine has fiercely rejected.

Ukraine has not outright denied Moscow's version of events, but questioned whether captured Ukrainian soldiers were actually on board and said Moscow never told it in advance that POWs would be flown near the border.

Officials in Kyiv have called for Moscow to publish photos of the dead POWs' bodies or provide other evidence to back up its claims.

Wednesday's exchange -- which took place exactly a week after the plane was shot down -- was the 50th swap between the two sides since Russia invaded in February 2022, Kyiv said.

Ukraine said more than 3,000 POWs have now been returned. A similar number of Russians have also been freed, with most exchanges based on a one-for-one format.

Thousands who have been captured or surrendered throughout the near two-year war are thought to still be in captivity.

- 'Not stopping' -

On the battlefield, both sides reported ongoing fights for territory across the sprawling frontline.

Oleksandr Shtupun, a spokesman for Ukraine's army, said Ukraine's forces were "firmly on the defensive" in the eastern Donetsk region.

"The enemy has not stopped trying to surround Avdiivka," he said in an interview with state TV.

Russian forces have been trying to capture the strategic town -- which Ukrainians see as a symbol of resistance -- for months.

Putin on Wednesday appeared to confirm Russia was moving in on the town, claiming Moscow's troops had captured 19 houses on its outskirts.

Its forces fired a barrage of drones and missiles across Ukraine overnight in another round of aerial bombardment.

On the diplomatic front, Kyiv is hoping for a breakthrough this week over unlocking 50 billion euros ($54.2 billion) of aid from the EU.

EU leaders will meet on Thursday to discuss future support for Kyiv, hoping to reach a final agreement over a massive four-year financial aid package that was blocked by Hungary last year.

Russian occupiers continue their attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops on the left bank of the Dnipro River. The Ukrainian Armed Forces fired on two enemy observation posts, according to the South operational command.

Over the past day, Russian troops made 3 unsuccessful attempts to assault but retreated after suffering losses in manpower and equipment.

At the same time, the Russians continue to conduct aerial reconnaissance, as well as to put pressure with artillery shelling, attack drones, and guided bombs. They have also resumed attacks with unguided aircraft missiles.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to inflict fire on the enemy's locations, positions, and rear. Among the enemy's losses:

・32 occupants;

・1 Grad multiple rocket launcher system;
・9 guns, including the Msta-B howitzer;

・2 strike Lancets drones and one reconnaissance Merlin drone;

・7 units of automotive equipment;

・2 observation posts.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over the past day, February 1, Ukrainian soldiers eliminated another 1,000 Russian occupants. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has lost 386,230 troops.

Это вы намекаете надо испачкаться в грязи и жить без электроэнергии?

Вы не поверите это действительно помогает человеку по быть на природе к примеру в лесу или горах чтобы отдохнуть от русского общества.
И даже спустя 16 дней возвращаться в больное росыйское общество не хочется (оно курит, употребляет алкоголь, как попугаи повторяют нужна победа. Хотя бы задумались над словами. Ведь по факту нужен мир на планете, а не победа). Поэтому приходиться сократить общение до минимума чтобы на заразиться рашизмом.
