ATHENS, 25 August – Russia made a tremendous comeback to win a spot at the final, by winning Brazil 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 28-26, 16-14) at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.



Brazil started the match very well and with a 6-1 streak they took a five-point lead (18-13) thanks to the spikes by Virna DIAZ and Walewska OLIVEIRA. The Russian team couldn’t resist, despite Ekaterina GAMOVA’s great effort (10 points); and this lack of attacking options, other than using her, allowed Brazil to sail to an easy victory (25-18).



The Russians were determined to change things during the second set and showed from the beginning what they were capable of. GAMOVA continued to execute almost perfectly, guiding Russia to a 17-10 lead, while the Brazilians looked like they had lost their concentration. Suddenly everything changed in favour of Brazil, as the Russians failed to maintain their big lead. With good defence, efficient spiking and guided attack by Marriane STEINBRECHER, who scored 14 points in the second set, Brazil made a tremendous comeback to win the set classy (25-21).



After this unbelievable comeback, it was obvious that the Brazilian’s morale was sky-high, while the Russians were forced to play a ‘do it or die’ set. The third set went point by point, until Russia took the win, thanks to a kill block made by Marina SESHENINA and a powerful spike by Lioubov SHASHKOVA.



The fourth set was a great battle. Neither team managed to take a bigger than a two-point lead, until 18-18. At this turning point, Brazil went very close to winning the match and were leading by 24-20, but Russia were more concentrated at crucial moments and won the set 28-26!



During the fifth set, technique was not enough; both teams had to show psychological endurance in order to win the match. Finally Russia were the team to overcome another big lead from Brazil (from 10-13 to 13-13), win the set (16-14) and earn a birth to Saturday’s final.
