The Stroll is a new Russian adventure in the world of film-making- the adventure that recalls Battleship Potemkin, The Russian Ark and other magical and/or unrepeatable Russian films.
The Stroll has simple plot though it is interesting and the details that frill it are very deep. It is not a typical road movie although 80 per cent of it was shot on streets; the real streets of contemporary St Petersburg. The story takes place in few hours of one day of Olga and her 2 fellows and we get the feeling that the whole film was shot in one day. It is for sure was shot in short time—which I reckon was main part of the entire experimental nature of the film. However, it was obvious that preparing to shoot the film and practicing shooting and acting took very long time before (real) production has started. The crazy use of mobile camera that followed those 3 guys crossing crowded and dangerous streets made me think how lucky was the cameraperson that he/she did not get killed in a car accident. Did he/she? Hope not.
The film style is new. There is that unusual mix of applying new play-acting method to cinema. It is a result of Peter Fomenko's stage-acting method and workshops. Adapting stage-acting styles into films resulted historically in handful of amazing films including Marcel Carne's Children of Paradise and John Cassavetes' Opening Night. From this perspective The Stroll is amazing film.

25th Moscow International Film Festival, 2003)
I just watched this 2003 movie on DVD. Excellent film, especially for a Russian movie. It's like a Russian version of Richard Linklater's BEFORE SUNSET taking place in St. Petersburg, and a bit more thrilling and real. It's a camera shake movie, but it's totally not as distracting or headache-inducing as in ROSETTA and in BOURNE SUPRMEMECY. The movie definitely makes one want to visit St. Petersburg, Russia.
For those who did not understand this great movie, I would like to say, that it is probably because you do not know what does "Russioan soul" mean. It is quite difficult to explain, you just have to feel it.This movie is very alive and sincere, and if you did not see a lot of action and shooting in it(what is typical for American movies)it does not mean it is badly made.It is about love, and I really feel soory for you, if you were not touched by "The Stroll". But of course all of us have different tastes the movie is just a perfect example of what Russian traditionally low budget mainstream cinema (as compared to US standards) can do without advertising-like special effects, mafia shootings, and superheroes
The Stroll was directed by 51-year-old Alexei Uchitel, a longtime documentary maker who began making features in 1995. He shot this latest film on digital video, the technology which, as we all know by now, allows for long, unbroken takes using lightweight cameras. Or, as you might say if you saw The Stroll, Yikes!
There is an underlying logic to Uchitel’s technique. The action unwinds on the streets of St. Petersburg beginning when a young man in his 20s picks up a young woman. They banter and the sparks begin to fly. Then – in what, God knows why, is an all-too-familiar blunder – the young man decides to introduce his newfound girl to his best friend. A kind of Jules-et-Jim-in-an-afternoon ensues which is so psychologically well-attuned, and which incorporates the city of St. Petersburg so well, that it’s more than enough to sustain the film’s entrancing mood. Though the irritation caused by the over-insistent long-takes subsides only slightly.
Problematically, The Stroll resolves itself with a twist ending that, according to my Russian colleague on the jury, is driven at least largely by socio-political point-making. Not knowing this weakened the film for me and I’m not sure knowing it would have made it any stronger.
Originally Posted by FOLEY

Alexei Uchitel's movie is like an exercise in ad-libbing, but exceptionally well-performed, smoothly choreographed and expertly filmed (с)
I enjoyed this immensely largely because of the fresh and energetic camerawork and cinematography (с).
Complete irreverence is displayed to the maintenance of correct exposure or stable framing, but these imperfections are heartily embraced as a refreshing liberation from the shackles of Hollywood precision and homogenisation (at least in the mind of this humble reviewer) (с)
