California beach reopens after fatal shark attackOriginally Posted by omele
By Sal Ruibal, USA TODAY
Surfers are returning to the waves now that an 8-mile section of beach north of San Diego has been reopened after Friday's shark attack off Solana Beach killed swimmer David Martin.
Tooth fragments found in the body of Martin, a 66-year-old retired veterinarian from Solana Beach, confirm that he was attacked by a great white shark.
The San Diego Medical Examiner's Office reported Tuesday that, judging by several serrated tooth fragments in Martin's body, the shark was 15 to 16 feet long.
While shark attacks are rare in the area, there have been numerous recent sightings of white sharks because females give birth in March and April. But experts say it is unlikely a shark would attack a swimmer to defend its newborn offspring.
Solana Beach's Alex Von Taub, who surfs and swims in the area of the attack, said surfers reported a seal jumping out of the water shortly before Martin was bitten.

"I'm not surprised," said Von Taub, general manager of the Killer Dana Surf Shop in nearby Dana Point. "I've seen a lot more sea lions in the area recently.
"A shark will travel 150 miles a day to get food, so that's probably what was going on."
Von Taub said he will continue to surf and paddle in the area but will no longer swim alone there.
"It seems that the sharks like to select a victim that's alone or the last in a group," he said.
Bnqt.com, which is owned by Gannett Co., publisher of USA TODAY, reports that while shark attacks are nothing to laugh at, the odds are still in favor of humans:
•In the USA between 1959 and 2007, an average of 39.7 people were killed by lighting each year. For the same span, human fatalities caused by sharks averaged 0.48.
•From 1959 to 2007, there were 903 reported shark attacks in the USA, resulting in 23 deaths.
•In 1995 there were 95 incidents of squirrels biting humans in New York City, compared with 13 shark injuries reported in the USA.
MMA:
While Chuck Liddell's injury forced Ultimate Fighting Championship to reconfigure its card for UFC 85, now featuring Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves on June 7 in London, the main event of the next major UFC card is unchanged. BJ Penn (13-4-1) will defend the UFC lightweight championship against former champion Sean Sherk (35-2-1) at UFC 84, May 24 in Las Vegas.
Sherk lost his title when he was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after a positive test for a banned substance. He watched Penn beat Joe Stevenson to win the crown in January.
Also on the UFC 84 card is former Pride FC champion Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine, who upset Liddell in September.
Upcoming fights in other mixed martial arts circuits:
•International Fight League: Roy Nelson vs. Branden Lee Hinkle, May 16, live on HDNet.
•World Victory Road: The new Japanese promotion's May 18 event will be headlined by U.S. heavyweights Josh Barnett, a former UFC champ, and Jeff Monson.
