Korean Movie Theater Chain Shows Avatar in 4D

Avatar is not only the catalyst that is driving the push to bring 3D to your home theater, but in Korea, a movie theater chain is taking it up a notch by presenting Avatar as a 4D movie-going experience. In addition to the visual 3D effect that is now common in movie theaters and about to implemented in the home, CJ-CGV of Korea is showing Avatar in a theater environment that also includes motion simulation seating and wind effects to further enhance the movie-going experience.

In the U.S. although there are thousands of 3D-equipped movie theaters, and a small number of theaters with motion simulation seating, they are not combined (except for some limited theme park applications).

On the other hand, U.S. based companies, such as D-Box and Crowson Technology do have motion simulation products available for home theater use, which, combined with 3D, could bring a 4D-type experience into the home. To support this potential option, a growing number of Blu-ray Discs are encoded with D-Box motion codes, which can easily be placed on any forthcoming 3D Blu-ray Disc releases, at a studio's discretion. Of course, you still need additional equipment and/or special seating to access the added dimension.
