Obviously - CAPTURE BOARD - is needed ONLY for ANALOG VIDEO. Digital video goes directly into firewire port.

USB 2.0 is formally fast enough. However, unlike Firewire, it's speed is not guaranteed, that's why applications like DV data transfer which require high (and constant) bandwidth don't do well over USB.

And DV transfer is digital, it has nothing to do with quality.

Dropped frames - exactly what is caused by insufficient or inconsistent connection speed. One may call Firewire "better quality" than USB, but actually these are apples and oranges.

Partially but likely not. Dropped frames are much more likely to be caused by inadequate HARD DRIVE speed. The USB or Firewire interfaces are much faster in theory than the real camera-to-disk speed.

This is correct, but maximum does not mean "always guaranteed".
Modern CPU can execute billions of instructions per second, but neither Windows not standard Unix can guarantee that particular application will always get as little as 1% of these CPU cycles.
