An old friend and fund-raiser of US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has been found guilty of fraud for demanding kickbacks.

Real estate developer Antoin "Tony" Rezko was also convicted of bribery and money-laundering in the case which has dogged Obama during his quest to secure the party's presidential nomination, even though he is not accused of any wrong-doing, AFP reported.

In all, jurors found the Syrian-born Rezko guilty of 12 counts of fraud, two of aiding and abetting bribery and two of money laundering after deliberating for 12 days.

The Illinois senator subsequently donated all the money raised for his White House bid by Rezko to charity, but prosecutors have said some of the kickbacks ended up in his campaign coffers.

Wednesday's verdict was immediate fodder for Obama's Republican rival John McCain, with the Republican Party's national committee sending out a statement saying "Obama has maintained a friendship with a now convicted felon."

Prosecutors accused Rezko of "using his power and influence to benefit himself and his friends."

Antoin "Tony" Rezko (born 1955 in Aleppo, Syria) is an American political fundraiser, restaurateur, and real estate developer in Chicago, Illinois recently convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery. Rezko has been involved in fundraising for local Illinois Democratic and Republican politicians since the 1980s. He focused primarily on Chicago-area Democrats; for example, Rezko was one of Barack Obama's first financial contributors. After becoming a major contributor to Rod Blagojevich's successful gubernatorial election, Rezko assisted Blagojevich in setting up the state's first Democratic administration in twenty years. Rezko was able to have business associates appointed onto several state boards. Rezko and several others were indicted on federal charges in October 2006, for using their connections to the state boards to demand kickbacks from businesses that wanted to do business with the state. While the others plead guilty to the charges, Rezko plead not guilty and was found guilty of 16 of the 24 charges filed against him..."
