Belarus under Russian fire: how Moscow is erasing national identity.

Russia is gradually taking control of Belarus — through media, education, and work with youth. This is reported by The Atlantic Council.

After the 2020 protests, Belarusian propaganda completely merged with Kremlin propaganda. Prime time on TV is decided in Moscow, because that’s where the money and "consultants" are.

This year, a joint media holding with a budget of 1 billion rubles is being launched. The main office is in Moscow. Minsk is just a branch. At the same time, the information space inside the country is being blocked: about 18,000 websites have already been blocked, and independent editorial offices have left.

Pressure is also applied through education. Russia promotes the narrative of the "younger sister," changes textbooks, museum programs, and concerts. The number of budget places in Russian universities for Belarusians increased from 72 in 2019 to 1,300 in 2023, plus 30,000 places under the "Rossotrudnichestvo" program.

The conclusion is obvious: Moscow is methodically erasing Belarusian identity — following the same scenario it wanted to apply to Ukraine during Yanukovych’s time.
