White House tells Americans to get booster shot as soon as possible to protect against Omicron: Biden holds emergency Covid briefing in DC as variant is detected in Canada in travelers from Nigeria (which is NOT on the US travel ban list)
Joe Biden on Sunday evening held an emergency meeting in the Oval Office with his COVID advisory team
Anthony Fauci told Biden it would take two weeks until more data was obtained, but they were hopeful the vaccines would be effective against Omicron
The White House on Sunday urged people to get their booster shots, as a matter of priority, as the first cases were confirmed in North America
The two cases - both in Canada's capital, Ottawa - were confirmed on Sunday by the health authorities
Both individuals had traveled from Nigeria - a country which is not currently on the US travel ban
The US travel ban was introduced on Friday and goes into effect on Monday, and includes eight sub-Saharan nations
The eight are South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi
Canada introduced its own travel ban on Friday, which went into effect immediately - but Nigeria was not on their list either
