"The City did the right thing. It's better and easier to over prepare even in the aftermath. You don't know what's going to happen until almost the last second. Just the exact spot it hits and the subsequent direction can make a big difference. The City was absolutely correct in what it did. There are major road washouts in parts of Nassau, power is out in parts of the metro area. I have to drive out to my parents who have no power at the moment. This is no picnic. "
"Agree that precautions taken were the right choice. A little inconvenience is worth any lives that may have been lost. I would much prefer my elected officials to err on the side of caution. "
"Glad all ok by you. And FWIW, I do agree with the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" thing. I think you need to overshoot the mark here...esp after Katrina, the microburst and blizzard we had. Public officials HAVE to scare a little I think...
Better complaints than death, IMHO."
"I looked all over my property. No damage. No damage I can see on the street, just small branches everywhere. No flooding in my basement...I was worried about that. My rain gauge tops out at a little over 5", so I don't know how much came down. I was up most of the night...a tree branch scraping my roof kept me awake. Every time I looked out the window, winds looked bad but not too bad. I finally fell asleep and slept through the actual hurricane. While it ended up a tropical storm, all precautions were fully justified. The flooding was bad in some areas. But this is a no win situation for city government- they take precautions, everyone bitches because the storm was less than "hyped". They do nothing, and the storm is bad, they are pilloried for doing nothing. The only winning situation for them is that the storm turns out to be as disastrous, or worse, than predicted, and we were prepared for that. What would you prefer? For over a decade, I have been reading and hearing that NYC is woefully unprepared for a big hurricane. Now they finally do something about that, and people complain even more...."
