Sometimes hitting rock bottom is a good thing...
You know the good thing about hitting rock bottom? The only way forward is up. Life has an annoying habit of throwing you curve balls every now and again and they have a tendency of knocking you down a peg or two. I was recently hit with one of these balls and it got me thinking. Now in my case that’s sometimes a bad thing. I have been told in the past that I think too much, spend too much time in my head and over analyze situations that really call for me to just go with the flow. Ok fine, so I agree, but that’s just who I am and this is not one of those situations. The mind is a powerful tool and I like to use mine, so let’s see where I wind up.
Going through all the feelings and emotions that come with having the carpet taken out from under me, I was feeling a little sorry for myself. Beating myself up with the usual questions like “why is this happening again” and “what did I do to deserve this”, I started to realize that the answers I was looking to get were not the ones that I needed to hear. Sure I could blow sunshine up my ass and tell myself things will be alright, but that’s not what I needed. I needed to take stock of my surroundings, realize that I have hit rock bottom, and that the only way forward is up. Bad things happen, deal with it, move on.
Once the walls of your life come crashing down and you are sitting on a pile of rubble wondering where to from here, you have but two options. Either you sit there feeling sorry for yourself, picking up little pieces of rubble and trying to picture what once was, or you can clean the slate and start from scratch. I like the second option. Starting anything from scratch isn’t an easy task; it’s going to take a while. The nice thing about doing it this way is that you get to pick and choose what you want to put into the project. It’s like re-installing a computer (sorry, it’s mainly us geeks that will understand this analogy). There’s nothing quite like the feeling of having a clean install to customize and work off of. For the non-geeks out there, think of it like a blank canvas and you’re the artist, you get to choose what you paint.
Now for the part that requires the brain power – Imagination. I mentioned at the start that the mind is a powerful tool. You know the expression “you can do anything you set your mind to”? In front of you is this blank canvas, now it’s time for your imagination to take over. Think about what it is that you want to change or achieve and then let your imagination run amok. The sky is the limit. If you have the stones to stick with your vision, you will make it. Don’t give up. A simple mathematical formula would look like this: imagination + willpower = reality.
To paraphrase Sir Richard Branson – “Screw it, let’s do it!!”
