The Russian tall ship Pallada sailed into the Port of Los Angeles on Thursday, setting off cameras and turning heads.
The vessel is on an international trans-Pacific expedition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's space flight and the 270th anniversary of "Russian America" - the name of Russian colonial possessions in the Americas from 1733 to 1867 that today includes Alaska.
The ship, built in 1989 in Poland, carrying 200 Russian sailors, will be at Berth 87 (Harbor Boulevard around First Street in San Pedro) through Saturday. While in port, the sailors will play soccer with a U.S. Coast Guard team and visit the Queen Mary and Hollywood. Public tours are offered Saturday, but there are only 1,000 reservation
