Russia Map Shows Ukraine Drones Hit Shocking New Milestone
    Story by Isabel van Brugen

Ukrainian military learn to fly drones with bombs attached at a special school on May 12, 2023 in Lviv region Ukraine. For the first time in the war launched by Moscow, Ukrainian drones flew approximately 1,200 kilometers to reach their target in Russia's republic of Tatarstan, local media reported on Tuesday.

For the first time in the war launched by Moscow, Ukrainian drones flew around 1,200 kilometers [745 miles] to reach their target in Russia's republic of Tatarstan, local media reported on Tuesday.

A drone attack on Yelabuga and Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan is reported to have hit an industrial area that produces Iranian-designed Shahed drones—which Moscow uses extensively in the war in Ukraine. It marked the first time a drone from Ukraine had reached the republic, and it's the deepest strike inside Russian soil since the war began, according to local media outlets.

Russia has been hit with waves of drone strikes since President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with some attacks reaching the capital Moscow. Many strikes have targeted ammunition depots and warehouses. Ukraine rarely claims responsibility for attacks on Russian soil, but the Kremlin has accused Kyiv of trying to carry out terrorist attacks using drones.

Newsweek has contacted the foreign ministries of Ukraine and Russia for comment by email.

"For the first time, a Ukrainian drone flew to a target 1,200 km away," the Crimean Wind Telegram channel said.

X (formerly Twitter) user "markito0171", who posts regular updates on the war in Ukraine, shared a map on Tuesday that shows the drones' trajectory.

A video shared by Russian Telegram channels on Tuesday appeared to show the moment a drone struck a site in Yelabuga, causing a huge fireball.

Russian state-run news agency Tass said at least seven people were wounded, including two teenagers.

Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov said in an interview with German national daily newspaper Die Welt, published on Monday, that Kyiv now has drones capable of striking targets more than 1,000 kilometers [620 miles] away.
"Most of the drones that attacked Russian oil refineries have a range of 700 to 1,000 kilometers [435 to 620 miles], but now there are models that can fly more than 1,000 kilometers," Fedorov said.

Just weeks ago, Verstka, an independent Russian news outlet that was founded shortly after the Ukraine war began, published a map that showed that the latest drone attacks on Russian soil have widened the area of the country in Ukraine's firing range to 1.045 million square kilometers [403,476 square miles].

Verstka cited a drone strike in March on a metallurgical factory belonging to steelmaker Severstal in the city of Cherepovets, which is in Russia's Vologda region. The news outlet said it was one of the "most distant targets" from Ukraine's front lines that have been attacked on Russian soil since the war began.

"The attack on the enterprise in Cherepovets expanded Russia's potentially vulnerable territory to attacks by the Ukrainian army by 45 thousand square kilometers [17,375 square miles]," Verstka said. "Now it is about 1,045,000 square kilometers. It contains six million-plus cities, including two federal cities—Moscow and St. Petersburg."

Verstka added: "Previously, in the northeastern direction, drones flew to St. Petersburg and Yaroslavl, where the targets were the Nevsky Mazut plant and the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery."

The Ukrainian Military Has Repurposed the Soviet DShK as a Shoulder-Fired Infantry Weapon
    Story by Clare Fitzgerald

The Russian-produced DShK is among the longest-serving machine guns still in use today. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian military found itself with a stockpile of the weapons, which it has since repurposed for use as a shoulder-fired infantry weapon.

The DShK's history dates back to the Second World War
In 1929, the Russians began developing a firearm that was comparable in power and performance to the American M2 Browning .50 caliber machine gun. After years of work on an effective design, production began on the 75-pound DShK. Over the course of the Second World War, around 9,000 were produced.

Used extensively by the Red Army during the war, the 12.7 x 108 mm DShK was mounted to military vehicles (primarily tanks and trucks) and used as an anti-aircraft gun. It also saw action with the Russian infantry, through the use of a two-wheeled trolley.

Following the war, a new variant of the DShK was produced, featuring a revised feeding system and muzzle. These modifications made the machine gun more reliable and easier to produce. Over a million were manufactured between 1946-80, many of which were delivered to forces around the world.

During the Vietnam War, the DShK was smuggled through Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia for use by the communist forces. It's believed the majority of the American aircraft downed during the conflict were destroyed by the weapon. This reputation led to its use in the Middle East, particularly against British troops in 2004, and by rebel forces during the Syrian Civil War.

In 1971, the NSV heavy machine gun was introduced to the Soviet military as a partial replacement for the DShK. However, it didn't last long and was replaced by the Kord heavy machine gun in 1998. Despite attempts to replace it, as well as the fact it's no longer in production, the DShK remains in active service, thus making it the only .50 caliber machine gun - aside from the M2 - to still be in use today.

Modified for use by the Ukrainian military
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was left with a stockpile of DShKs that were later modified for use in trench warfare. These changes came about during War in Donbas in 2014, when it was realized the Ukrainian military's 7.62 mm x 54 mmR PKM general-purpose machine guns didn't provide the necessary accuracy or effectiveness.

The modifications included the development of a muzzle break, which lessened the DShK's recoil, as well as the creation of a bipod and shoulder stock that allowed it to be carried and used by just two infantrymen. When paired with a pistol grip and conventional trigger, the machine gun turned into an ideal shoulder-fired infantry weapon.

Following the success of field tests, the modified DShK was standardized by the Ukrainian military, with officials impressed by its ability to accurately fire the powerful .50 caliber round.

Chinese and Indian Weapons May Be Clashing in Ukraine
    Story by David Brennan

The insatiable appetite of Russia's war on Ukraine is drawing in weapons and munitions from all over the world, as both sides seek an edge in a devastating attritional contest now more than two years old.

The dynamic is pitting arms from many nations against each other. Many such contests are planned and approved by suppliers. Ukraine's use of Western military technology against the Russian invasion force is the most visible example of NATO backing for Kyiv.

Moscow's use of Iranian kamikaze drones against Ukrainian cities being defended by Western anti-air systems, meanwhile, touches on the decades-long simmering conflict between Tehran and Washington, D.C.

Ukraine and Russia—whether at the state, military, or individual level—are also turning to the private market to fill gaps in their arsenals. The many degrees of separation provided by international trade networks have prompted some more surprising battlefield matchups.

Multiple photographs have emerged in recent months of Ukrainian gunners using what appear to be Indian-made artillery shells to attack Russian positions, where Moscow's troops are increasingly outfitted with Chinese weapons ranging from artillery rounds to quadrocopter drones and even golf cart-style buggies.

The Indian government—which has refused to join Western sanctions on Moscow and has been enjoying significantly discounted energy imports from Russia—in January "categorically" denied any knowledge of the supply of shells to Ukrainian forces.

Unconfirmed media reports suggested that the 155mm shells were first sold to at least two European nations—one reportedly Slovenia—by the Munitions India Limited MIL private company, before being forwarded on to Ukraine. Newsweek has contacted MIL and the Ukrainian Defense Ministry by email to request comment.
Slovenia dismissed the reports as "fake news" in a statement published last month, adding that the country had "never purchased" 155mm munitions in India, "nor had it participated in the transfer or resale of such ammunition to other countries."

"Such misleading reporting is an attempt both to damage the Republic of Slovenia and to discredit its international role, since it has become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council."

India, historically non-aligned, has resisted being drawn into the war on Ukraine. New Delhi has long maintained close economic and military ties with Russia, partially due to a wider bid for partners in its long-simmering confrontation with northern neighbor China.

A 2023 Morning Consult poll showed that Indians now consider China the country's greatest military threat. New Delhi is increasingly wary amid Chinese pressure in disputed Himalayan border regions, Beijing's growing influence in neighboring nations like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and closer Russian-Chinese ties amid the war on Ukraine.

The presence of Indian arms in Ukraine has not been confirmed. Russia's use of Chinese-produced equipment and munitions has been, though direct supply by Beijing has not been proven.

Newsweek has reached out to Indian, Russian and Chinese authorities for comment via email.

The U.S. confirmed in March 2023 that Chinese artillery rounds had been found in use on Ukrainian battlefields. Ukrainian forces have also reported coming across Chinese-made munitions, though it is unclear where the rounds originated and when they were supplied. Moscow is believed to be receiving direct munitions deliveries from North Korea and Iran.

China has repeatedly denied supporting Russia's aggression with direct aid, framing itself as a neutral power and potential arbiter in any future peace talks. But Beijing's deepening economic, political, and military ties with Moscow suggest a de facto backing for the war on Ukraine.

Greece Boosts Ukraine's Arsenal with Artillery Shells in Czech-led Multinational Initiative
    Story by Isaac Jones

Greece has stepped forward as a crucial supplier of artillery ammunition for Ukraine in a Czech Republic-led initiative, which seeks to provide vital support to Kyiv amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. The Czech initiative, garnering international support, represents a significant effort to address a pressing shortage of artillery shells faced by Ukraine’s military forces.

Minister of Defense Ioannis Kefalogiannis, addressing the parliament standing committee on Armament Programs and Contracts, confirmed that Greece will supply munitions from its army warehouses, with the cost of transfer, estimated at $156 million, to be reimbursed by other nations. This move is part of a larger emergency delivery of artillery worth around $1.9 billion to Ukraine, as reported by news outlets.

The Ukrainian military, grappling with a significant shortage of ammunition due to domestic production constraints and slowed European manufacturing, has been outgunned in terms of the volume of artillery shells fired by Russian forces. This has resulted in a near-starvation of ammunition for Ukrainian artillery units, a situation exacerbated by a US ban on arms deliveries to Ukraine since December due to a Congressional impasse.

The ammunition provided by Greece includes shells, fuses, and propellant for medium and large-caliber guns, deemed surplus due to belonging to old production lots or being suitable for weapons no longer in service with the Greek military. A significant portion of these supplies is 155mm NATO-standard shells, a system highly popular with the Ukrainian army and introduced to the conflict in May 2022.
The report by the Athens-based iEidisies news agency highlights that other munitions to be sold by Greece include a variety of artillery shells, such as Cold War-era 30mm and WW2-era 40mm anti-aircraft shells, Vietnam-era 203mm heavy artillery shells, and modern 105mm anti-tank and high explosive shells. Notably, US-made 203mm shells are compatible with the Soviet-era 2S7 Pion howitzers operated by Ukraine, a weapon valued for its range and accuracy.

The total value of Greek ammunition and equipment to be transferred to Ukraine is estimated to be equivalent to $185 million, as reported by iEdiseis. This commitment forms part of the $1.9 billion pledged by more than 15 countries to fund the Czech-led cooperative’s search for artillery shells. Germany has emerged as the largest contributor, with significant pledges also made by Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway, among others.

Prague officials have led the charge in mobilizing support for Ukraine, calling on nations to pool resources to finance the procurement of artillery shells from global markets. The urgency of the initiative is underscored by the competition in international markets for Soviet-standard calibers.

Ukraine prepares deployment of long-range drones capable of targeting Urals and Polar regions – Bild
    Story by Богуслав Романенко

Missiles are a thing of the past. Drones are the future," their source said.

By the end of the year, ten manufacturers are expected to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with drones capable of reaching distances up to 2,500 km.

Among these new drones is the Sokil-3000, developed by the Kyiv-based Luch design bureau, which boasts a range of up to 3,300 km.

The new Ukrainian weapon poses a potential threat to military bases in Murmansk Oblast, including the Olenya airfield, where strategic bombers that have been firing on Ukraine are based. The drones could also target other military installations among the approximately 80 bases in the region.

    Attack on enterprises in Tatarstan

This development comes after a recent joint operation by Ukraine’s SBU security service and the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, in which two UAVs attacked enterprises in Yelabuga and Nizhnekamsk, more than 1,000 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Local media reported that six people were injured in the attack on the oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk.

NV's sources reported that a Shahed kamikaze drone assembly plant was hit. The source noted that the attack by the HUR caused significant damage to production facilities. In particular, during an attack on a refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, a Ukrainian long-range drone hit a primary oil refinery, which caused a fire.
The drone attack on the plant in Tatarstan caused significant damage to the plant itself, according to HUR.
