By the way, why did you prefer to cross the Russian border, instead of using Ukrainian checkpoints?
I think you simply didn't want to donate some money to Donetsk People's Republic.
In exchange, their authorities would generously grant you permission "to cross Ukrainian border".

Before the trip I checked with my cousin who is crossing those checkpoints on regular basis - she was terrified by the Ukrainian para-militia troops, who were shamelessly robbing the civilians; and stealing money and groceries, and if the Ukrainians smelt SALO, they were getting dangerously excited and shooting left and right like crazy.
