I have one through AuPaircare. You get 45 hours a week of "work" and if you amortize the collective cost it is 7.75 an hour. Roughly 8K to the agency and you pay the aupair 200 a week. Ours is from Brazil and it has been an awesome experience. I think the biggest mistake is when people dont try to make the relationship mutually beneficial and instead treat them like an employee instead of a member of the family. I feel as if she is my adult child (albeit a 21 yr old very mature woman) and I try to encourage her to grow and have experiences here.. we provide her with a car to drive, we are very open in communicating, etc. My point is that we are part of the reason it has been positive and we also got very lucky. Our au pair is not only loving and wonderful with my boys, she works very hard and also has a fun, full life here so we don't feel like she is always in our space. It is not for everyone.. but I LOVE it. They are never late like a nanny can be! You can always msg me if you have any questions - I am happy to share
I am having the EXACT same experience as ***. I would say *exactly* the same thing. We treat our Au Pair as an adult daughter. I have a whole list of questions but it's on...a piece of paper. That said, I would totally change the questions I would ask now that I've had an Au Pair for 6 months. We use Au Pair in America. I recommend making a choice on agency based on your local facilitator. Schedule meetings with your local facilitators of the different agencies and ask to talk to local au pairs and see what they think of the facilitator. The facilitator makes a BIG difference. Our neighborhood has a facilitator who has been in her job for 20 years and is fantastic. Also, I know you and I both have twins and I have to say this is a huge win for twins. It's SOOOOO much cheaper than daycare. As long as you think it would be fun and enriching for your and your family's lives to basically have a foreign exchange student live with you who also takes responsibility for your children. PM me if you have more questions. Happy to talk at length about it. Also happy to talk on the phone about it.
To answer your above questions (and I can only speak for our agency): (1) having a car for her is not a requirement but consider where you live and consider what her quality of life will be without a car. You don't want a miserable adult woman/man taking care of your kids. (2) We have had our Au Pair since July 17th so 6 months now. The process can be as long or as short as you want. We spent about 2 months interviewing. By luck we found our Au Pair almost immediately. Be prepared for the $9000 agency fee! (3) If you don't like your Au Pair you go into rematch. However, you only get to choose from an Au Pair who has also gone into rematch. According to my Au Pair who monitors the Au Pair Facebook page all the time and tells me about the drama, the rematch process is not great. It is kind of a warped pool with a high rate of weird people as best I can tell but that is also a third hand interpretation of a process I've never been part of.
