Abandoning Permanent Resident Status
You may be found to have abandoned your permanent resident status if you:
Move to another country intending to live there permanently
Remain outside of the United States for more than 1 year without obtaining a reentry permit or returning resident visa. However, in determining whether your status has been abandoned, any length of absence from the United States may be considered, even if less than 1 year
Remain outside of the United States for more than 2 years after issuance of a reentry permit without obtaining a returning resident visa. However, in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the United States may be considered, even if less than 1 year
Fail to file income tax returns while living outside of the United States for any period
Declare yourself a “nonimmigrant” on your tax returns

Я не большой сторонник цитировать не гос. сорсы когда обсуждаются конкретные законы и т.п. но для образовательных целей вот эта цитата неплохо суммирует доступным языком что на сегодняшний день [the law of the land] так сказать.
After obtaining Permanent Residence in the United States, many people feel that whatever they do after that will not affect their status. But this is a mistaken view. There are many ways in which Permanent Residents could lose their status. This article will discuss some common ways in which this happens.
Moving Abroad
Permanent Residents who move abroad without first obtaining a travel document such as a Re-entry Permit, and who are not employed by the military or civilian contractors working for the US government risk losing their status.
Selling Property
Permanent Residents who sell their property and move abroad will usually be deemed to have abandoned their status as Permanent Residents and could be barred from re-entering the United States by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The same applies if the Permanent Resident no longer has a U.S. bank account or any visible ties left in the United States.
Failure to File U.S. Resident Income Tax Returns
As a Permanent Resident, you will be entitled to work legally in the United States without hindrance from any companies. But if you fail to file a US resident income tax return, you could lose your status as a Permanent Resident. Permanent Residents are not entitled to file non-resident alien tax returns at the end of the tax year. This will result in loss of status.
Criminal Activity
Permanent Residents must be law abiding not just because it is the right thing to do but because they face deportation for even seemingly "minor" offences. If Permanent Residents are convicted of drug offences, they fail to notify USCIS of a change of address, engage in terrorism, fraud or felonies; they will lose all their privileges and they will then be deported.
