Rapid City to Russia
Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, and with no ancestral ties to Russia, Becky Hammon will represent Russia in her Olympic debut at the Beijing Games. The star WNBA point guard was able to get a Russian passport and become a naturalized Russian citizen in 2007 because she had not played for another country in a FIBA-sanctioned event. The Olympics will mark her first major international event for her new team. But Hammon is not alone. Pennsylvania native J.R. Holden will play point guard for the Russian men's team in Beijing.

Unpatriotic?
Hammon's decision caused some to question her national pride, but she insists the Russian jersey is only a jersey, and gives her a chance to achieve a lifelong dream of competing at the Olympics. After seeing that her name was left off the list of pool players for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, she signed a contract with the Russian club team CSKA Moscow. Included in that contract was the potential of playing for Russia at the Olympics, which became official in April. Hammon subsequently got an invitation to try out for the U.S. team, but was unable to go to the tryout because of contractual obligations for CSKA Moscow. When she was younger, Hammon was so frightened by the 1984 film Red Dawn (about an invasion of the U.S. by the Soviet Union and Cuba) that she had to go sleep with her parents in their bedroom.
