Soprano Marina Poplavskaya was born in Moscow and studied at the State M Ippolitov-Ivanov Music Institute. She was a winner in the Bella Voce Pan-Russian Competition for Young Singers in 1997, First International Elena Obraztsova Competition in 1999, Queen Elizabeth International Competition in 2000, Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition in 2003, Romanciada International Competition of romance songs in 2004 and Maria Callas Grand Prix International Competition in 2005. She performed at the New Opera Theatre, Moscow from 1996 to 1998 and was a soloist at the Moscow Academic Opera Theatre from 2001 to 2004. She made her debut at the Bolshoi Theater in 2003 as Ann Truelove (The Rake's Progress), followed in 2004 by Maria (Mazeppa).

Her opera repertory includes Marfa (The Tsar's Bride), Oksana (Christmas Eve), title role (Iolanta), Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Xenia (Boris Godunov), title role (Rusalka), Luisa (The Duenna), Adina (L'elisir d'amore), Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), title role (Maria Stuarda), title role (Anna Bolena), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Donna Anna/Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Elena (I vespri Siciliani), Violetta (La traviata), title role (Luisa Miller), Elisabetta (Don Carlos), Amelia (Simon Boccanegra), Lucrezia (I due Foscari), Micaëla (Carmen), Marguerite (Faust), Rachel (La Juiva), Roxanne (Cyrano de Bergerac) and Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande). Concert repertory includes Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Shostakovich's 14th Symphony, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Rossini's Messa di Requiem, Poulenc's Messa di Requiem, Mozart's Litanies and Britten's War Requiem. She has recently sung Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) in Avignon and Valencia.

She joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in September 2005 and made her Royal Opera debut as the Third Norn (Götterdämmerung). She also understudied Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Tatyana (Eugene Onegin) and Roxanne (Cyrano de Bergerac). In the 2006/07 Season, she sang Rachel (La Juive in concert) and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni). She also understudied Leonora (Il Trovatore) and Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande).

Since leaving the Programme, she has undertaken or will undertake the following work: Third Norn in Götterdämmerung, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin and Elisabetta in Don Carlo for the Royal Opera, Natasha in War and Peace at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Violetta in La Traviata at Los Angeles Opera and Netherlands Opera, Marguerite in Faust at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Verdi Requiem at La Monnaie.
