Iconic Russian Rock Group DDT and Yuri Shevchuk Set to Tour North America

“Yuri Shevchuk, front man of DDT, is Russia's answer to Bono and has been at odds with the country’s authorities since his career began in 1980… DDT's music is banned from mainstream TV and radio channels, and Shevchuk is infamous for having had a heated television showdown with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in 2010.” - Alistair Foster, Evening Standard

“Now self-recorded and -promoted, DDT still attracts arenas full of fans throughout Russia and other former Soviet republics, and it continues to voice its criticisms through Shevchuk’s poetic lyrics. Moreover, since marketability hardly matters; the band has been free to alter its sound from album to album.” - Lara Pellegrinelli, Time Out New York

November 21, New York Iconic Russian rock band DDT with front man Yuri Shevchuk will present their new multimedia program “Otherwise” and play several “Unplugged” shows during their North American tour in January, 2013. Presented by Bliss Records, this will be the band’s first appearance here in five years.

Shevchuk, a legendary singer-songwriter, has been famous in Russia since the mid-80s. He has recently been in the news for supporting the jailed punk-feminist band Pussy Riot, as well as assisting the notorious Khimki forest defenders and participating in anti-Putin protests. All of this has only seemed to further empower the incredibly gifted and popular performer as he continues to communicate new ideas through his powerful songs.

For their North American tour, Yuri Shevchuk and DDT will present two new programs.
The first, entitled “Otherwise”, is a large-scale show designed for huge concert halls and stadiums. It combines an incredible line-up of songs, artfully produced lighting and sound design, videos and the band′s new sound into a dramatic musical experience. The program is based on 18 of the 26 songs included in the new double CD "Otherwise", as well as several time-tested hits.

The second program, "Unplugged" ("Solnik"), was conceived for smaller, more intimate venues. Its origins stem from Shevchuk′s book of poetry by the same name. The songs that DDT will perform at these shows will be more spontaneous: sometimes acoustic, sometimes "psychedelic-symphonic" rock sets. All the songs will be linked via Shevchuk’s poems, read by the author. "Unplugged" is a harmonious combination of texts and music that creates the impression of one complete drama, its plot held together by visuals created by the band onstage.

Says Yuri Shevchuk: “Otherwise” is an alternative way to experience existence in time and space, unlike the slavish consumerism imposed on society with all of its «positive» reinforcement. Everyone is capable of basking in the warmth of inner freedom. Everyone can choose to live “otherwise”, refusing to allow cynical propaganda and banal, hollow voices to answer the eternal questions of existence.”
