Never bring a toy to a gunfight.
Four bozos tried to rob an off-duty police detective with a toy gun in Far Rockaway yesterday, then scattered when he pulled a real weapon and started shooting.
The detective was walking his dog on the boardwalk near Beach 27th Street at about 6:20 p.m. yesterday when the four muggers sauntered up, held out the realistic-looking, but fake gun and tried to rob the cop, even after he identified himself, police said.
“There was a struggle and he let go some rounds,” a police source said.
The detective fired an unknown number of times, hitting one of the would-be robbers in the arm and chin and another in the foot.
The four thugs ran away, but police captured three in the immediate area, with one wounded man taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition. The fourth suspect walked into the same hospital later in the evening, helpfully informing staffers that he had been shot on Beach 27th Street near the boardwalk.
“These guys are imbeciles to rob a cop,” said Jalil Winters, 22, who lives on Beach 27th.
