they are not "doctor's assistants"...their official title is PA (physician assistant)

these are professionals, who have to go through several years of schooling geared toward certain procedures and areas in medecine where "volume" is important...i.e. in a lot of emergency rooms, it is the P.A.'s that do the simple suturing of lacerations that are not on the face.

for the most part, they are great at what they do. and since they do more of these routine procedures such as Pap smears that you are about to get, it will probably be as quick or quicker than the MD with same results.

Thanks! So does a physician assistant who works with a gynecologist have a professional training specifically in the area of gynecology and obstetrics?
And how about things other than routine procedures? Just wanna make sure that he/she wouldn't do whatever they think is right without consulting the doctor.

they are not doctors, so they do not undergo training in field X or Y or Z...what they do get in their professioanl education is a gamut of procedures/knowledge about specific routine things. In you case...a Pap is something quite routine and a PA is quite qualified to do one. Should that turn out to be abnormal, than an MD would have to do further workup.

PAs are not doctors, nor do they attemt to act as one. Their role is that of a skilled professional in certain things that a busy doctor would simply not have time to do if he/she were to try and do themselves.

(PAs get paid well, have to take examinations and obtain licenses)

Если еще актуально, я ходила, все тож самое.
