XRumer is a Windows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows) program that posts link spam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_spam) on forums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum), blogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog), and wikis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki) in order to boost search engine rankings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization). It claims to be able to bypass techniques commonly used by many websites to deter automated spam, such as account registration, CAPTCHAs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA), and e-mail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail) activation before posting.
The program makes heavy use of a database of known open proxies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_proxy) to make it more difficult for administrators to block posts.
In addition, the software can avoid the suspicions of forum admistrators by first registering to make a post in the form of a question which mentions the spam product ("Where can I get...?"), before registering another account to post a spam link which mentions the product. The side effect of these innocent-looking posts is that helpful forum visitors may Google on the term XRumer and themselves post a link to help out, thus bolstering XRumer's Google stats without falling afoul of forum posting policies.
