1. Dieting Damages Health

A slim body and vibrant health aren’t the usual results of dieting. Instead, more than two-thirds of people who diet almost immediately pile all the lost pounds back on — plus more — and raise their risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.

The world’s largest study of weight loss conducted by scientists at the University of California found that typical yo-yo dieting and the strain it puts on the body indicates that people who lose and regain weight would have been better off not dieting at all. The upshot of an analysis of more than 30 studies involving thousands of dieters is, dieting doesn’t work, and most people end up weighing more than when they started dieting.

“You can initially lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight on any number of diets,” said researcher Dr. Traci Mann. “But after this honeymoon period, the weight comes back.

“We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more. Sustained weight loss was found only in a small minority of participants, while complete weight regain was found in the majority.”

Mann found that both men and women tended to regain all their lost weight within four to five years as well as pack on additional pounds. One study found that dieters eventually gained more weight than volunteers who didn’t diet at all.

The harm dieters are doing to their health could be deadly. Research has found that constant weight gain and loss doubles the risk of dying from heart disease and raises the risk of premature death from all causes.

“We decided to dig up and analyze every study that followed people on diets for two to five years,” said Mann. “We concluded that most of them would have been better off not going on the diet at all.

“Their weight would have been pretty much the same, and their bodies would not suffer the wear and tear from losing weight and gaining it all back.

“The benefits of dieting are simply too small and the potential harms of dieting are too large for it to be recommended as a safe and effective treatment for obesity.”
