Victor,
If you are going to study in NYU, which is located in East Village (if I am not mistaken), may be it makes sense for you to look for some apartments in New Jersey, such as Jersey City and Hoboken. First of all, they both located 5 minutes away from Manhattan, you will have to get a path train to get to New York. Jersey City is not a really safe place but apartments there are so much cheaper than in New York, alot of Russians and it is right across the Hudson River. Hoboken is a really famous place, Frank Sinatra was born there, there are alot of restaurants, clubs, famous Stevens College, realty agencies and of course, alot of young people who can't afford living in New York. Wall Street employees live there, students from NYU and Columbia, everybody is so nice and the rent is reasonable there. It is a city for young people who are on the way to New York heights!
Bronx and Queens may not be bad, but if the rent is cheap, the apartment might be in a pretty bad neiborhood. If you are concerned about your safety, do not go to places like Bronx and Harlem, some places in Queens. Brooklin might not be bad but again, you need to know the neiborhood in order to rent an apartment there. Do not forget that you will have to sign the lease for a year or two and if later you realize that you can't live in a certain place because of the criminal situation, it will cost you alot of money to break the lease.
Moreover, it will take you 5 minutes to get to NYU from Hoboken, when it might take 20 minutes to get to Manhattan from Queens or Bronx.
Anyway, choice is yours, I am jsut trying to share my experience.
You can rent a studio in Hoboken for $700 or one-bedroom apartment for $1000.
Good luck
