New York OTDA Provides Information On Free Medical Screening for Refugees
Cite as "AILA InfoNet Doc. No. 06120115 (posted Dec. 1, 2006)"

On November 27, 2006, the New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), Office of Refugee and Immigrant Services (ORIS), disseminated two letters aimed at raising awareness among attorneys about free medical screening programs available to refugees and asylees. The letters explain that refugee and asylee clients may be eligible for a free medical screening exam under the Refugee Medical Screening Program funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. The exam is free if conducted within 90 days of arrival or 90 days from the date that status is granted.
The letters enclose a list of voluntary resettlement agency affiliates and local service providers who can assist refugees and asylees and provide a referral to a medical screening provider. One letter provides information for New York City while the other lists affiliates and providers in upstate New York.
