With all the turmoil going on in the Ukraine these past couple of months, many of Odessky Listok, [censored dammit] readers are now wondering if they were right to support the Orange Revolution. Ukrainian economy has certainly slowed down and inflation has picked up after the recent controversial elections. Re-privatization platform that Yuschenko ran on appears to be in trouble, with European Courts hearing appeals on its legality. In the meantime the government is taking steps that appear more socialistic than anyone could have ever expected. Arbitrary governmental price controls have been instituted and Ukraine now has the largest percentage of its budget of any country in the world going to pay pensions!
Against this backdrop, a new, but very familiar mayor was recently reinstalled in Odessa. More than 10 years after he was originally elected, and after a turbulent history of dethronement, he is back. Whether or not you like his miraculous court-induced return to power, you must respect the man who fought and won! Partially out of this respect and in part due to our own desire to get closer to the source of power, we have asked a member of Odesskiy Listok editorial board, Olga Tseryabina to use the opportunity of her upcoming trip to Odessa to meet with Eduard Gurvitz for an exclusive Odesskiy Listok interview.
If you too have questions for Mr. Gurvitz, please send them to us by email to: [censored dammit], by mail to: [censored dammit], by FAX or Voice Mail to: [censored dammit] or simply post them on our forums at: [censored dammit]. Please be sure to include your name, where you are from, where you currently reside and your past and current occupations, whenever possible. We would like to present Odessa’s mayor with questions from a group of people representative of our community, so don’t be shy! You may ask your question in your choice of Russian, English or Ukrainian, whatever is most comfortable.
We plan to publish the results of the interview in our July issue, so please hurry with your questions!
Sincerely,
Jake Berzon
